Starting a diesel engine

Cold or hot engine

All vehicles

Note: When the temperature is below -15ºC (5ºF), you may need to crank the engine for up to 25 seconds. If you consistently operate the vehicle in such temperatures, we recommend that you have an engine block heater fitted.

Note: Continue cranking the engine until it starts.

Note: You can only operate the starter for a maximum of 30 seconds at a time.

Switch the ignition on and wait


Switch the ignition on and wait until the glow plug indicator goes off.

Vehicles with manual transmission

Note: Do not touch the accelerator pedal.

1. Fully depress the clutch pedal.

2. Start the engine.

Vehicles with automatic transmission

1. Select park or neutral.

2. Fully depress the brake pedal.

3. Start the engine.
